Microstructural and hardness characterization of stainless steel 316-Inconel 718 multimaterial developed by wire-based Directed Energy Deposition
This study manufactures and characterises three IN718/SS316 multimaterial samples produced in a single step by wire-based Directed Energy Deposition, combining the high-temperature wear and corrosion resistance of IN718 with the weight and cost reduction locally provided by SS316.
Three multimaterial-sandwich strategies with a direct transition between alloys were built as 25 x 25 mm cubes: S1 (two layers per material), S2 (three layers) and S3 (four layers).
Cross-sections, microstructure in both build directions (XZ and XY planes) and Rockwell C hardness were evaluated in the IN718 segments, the IN718/SS316 interphases and the SS316 segments to compare the three strategies. S1 showed a repeatable crack and lack-of-fusion pattern at every interface, always originating at the border of the IN718 layer, while S2 and S3 only presented very small and isolated pores. S3 led to interphases free from relevant defects, with a smooth transition zone and a very fine microstructure (mean grain size between 5 μm for equiaxed grains and 20 μm for columnar and elongated grains in IN718, and a cellular dendritic austenitic structure in SS316). The three samples resulted in a hardness gradient decreasing from IN718 to SS316, with S3 reaching the highest profile: 55 ± 6 HRC in the IN718 region, 34 ± 1 HRC at the IN718/SS316 interphase and 9 ± 2 HRC in the SS316 region, above the values reported for conventional IN718 and for comparable multimaterial compositions produced by other AM technologies.
Relevance for Meltio: The samples were manufactured on a Meltio M450, using its multi-laser deposition head and dual-wire feeding to process 1 mm IN718 and 316LSi wires simultaneously, with the process parameters recommended in Meltio's material datasheets. The authors point out that Stainless Steel-Inconel multimaterial processing by DED-wire had not previously been reported in the literature, so the work directly widens the state of the art. It demonstrates Meltio's capability to build bimetallic parts with a tailored hardness gradient in a single step, with no joining or intermediate layers, and it provides a practical design rule for multimaterial printing: depositing more than two layers per material is enough to control the thermal and residual stresses that generate cracks at the interfaces.
